Goldwing Flasher
I have my 1983 Honda Goldwing up for sale for $3200. It’s a beautiful bike with only 15k original miles on it, and yesterday someone stopped in to take a look at it. I’ve put 6,000 miles on it without having a single malfunction, but of course while the man was looking at it the blinker system failed.
After he left I checked and tested all the fuses. They all worked, so that meant that the flasher was most likely the problem. I called a local Honda dealership to find out a flasher cost $50. I couldn’t believe it. I looked online to try and find out why in the hell the flashers cost so much. Apparently your basic $4 automotive flasher works just as well as the $50 Honda flasher.
It requires a little rewiring, but overall it is a simple procedure. Here are my instructions for replacing a Honda flasher with an automotive flasher.
Materials:
- Go to the electrical department of any automotive store and get your basic 3 prong thermal flasher. Prices will range from $3-12.
- Get 1/4″ insulated crimpable slide-on connectors to fit over the flasher prongs.
Instructions:
- Disconnect the old flasher, and then push the wires down so that they are sticking out near the bottom of the gas tank where they will be easier to handle.
- Cut off the old connection, then strip the wires and crimp a slide-on connector to each one of the wires.
- Pull the wires back up into the gas tank compartment where they were before, and wire them to the automotive flasher according to the diagram below. If you don’t wire it up correctly, don’t worry, but you will have to replace the flasher fuse in the fusebox. It’s not complicated though, so you shouldn’t be fucking it up.
- The green wire goes to the bottom prong.
- The gray wire goes to the right prong.
- The black wire goes to the left prong.

- An automotive flasher is a little smaller so it won’t fit in the rubber boot which held the Honda flasher. Just use something as a shim to give it a nice snug fit.
- Now pat yourself on the back, because you just saved $40.
Hello, you can buy a indicator relay for the honda goldwing on ebay for £4.50. All the best, Baz.
My 1800 had been in he rain. I pushed the flasher button and the flasher will not go off. I don’t know but it seems that the flasher button has stuck. How can I get to this unit to repair it without taking half the cycle apart?
No idea, sorry, I have only worked on my 1100 and I had to remove the gas tank to replace it. It’s not difficult though.
